Surviving as an Early Career Attorney (APAWALA Seminar)

SABA-SC’s young lawyers are invited to join this in-person seminar, hosted by the Asian Pacific American Women Lawyers Association (APAWALA).

This event is designed specifically for attorneys in their first few years of practice — a stage that can feel exciting, overwhelming, and full of questions about how to build a meaningful life in the profession. The program focuses on three themes:

  • Community and Belonging — finding mentors, building networks, and navigating the isolation that can come with the first years of practice.

  • Workplace Navigation — understanding expectations, managing difficult dynamics, and developing professional judgment.

  • Life Design and Finances — budgeting, planning, and designing a sustainable life outside of work.

Participants will hear candid reflections from mentors across BigLaw, small and medium sized firms, in‑house, public service, solo practice, and academia — not prescriptive advice, but real stories, practical lessons, and the reasoning behind important early‑career decisions. The program includes a panel, breakout discussions, and small‑group coffee chats so attendees can ask questions directly and connect with mentors in a low‑pressure setting.

Why this may be valuable for SABA young lawyers:

  • It’s a chance to hear honest perspectives from API attorneys who’ve navigated similar challenges.

  • It offers practical tools for building confidence and judgment in the early years.

  • It’s a supportive space to meet peers.

  • It’s a rare opportunity to talk openly about money, belonging, and workplace dynamics — topics that often go unaddressed in formal training.
